In Ontario, the Employment Standards Act, 2000 (the “ESA”) is legislation that sets out basic employment rights and protections, including:
Hours of work
Pregnancy and Parental Leave
Caregiver leave to care for an ill or injured family member
Protections against reprisal
All provincially regulated employers must comply with the requirements of the ESA. If you work for a federally regulated employer, such as a bank, airline, telecom provider, broadcaster, then you are subject to the Canada Labour Code. The Canada Labour Code contains similar employment standards entitlements and protections.
