What is termination without cause?
A termination without cause simply means that the employer is terminating the employment relationship for reasons other than for serious misconduct or serious neglect of duty.
An employer is legally permitted to terminate the employment of a non-unionized employee for any legal reason– for example, the position may have become redundant, the employer may be downsizing, the employment relationship is no longer working, or the employer has decided to move in a different direction.
There is no job protection, nor is the employer required to have a justification. However, if an employee is terminated without cause, the employee is entitled to advance notice of termination or payment in lieu of notice, which is a severance package.
